This book presents partial results of the international interdisciplinary research project ?The Governance of shrinkage within a European Context - Shrink Smart?, in which the authors participated. The aim of Shrink Smart was to study the role of policies and governance systems in different types of shrinking urban regions in Europe, such as Ostrava in the Czech Republic. The monograph consists of theoretical part outlining the theoretical frameworks for analysis of urban shrinkage and urban governanceand of three representative case studies. First case study describes the trajectory of shrinkage of the city of Ostrava in the last two decades 1990-2010. The conclusions are that Ostrava is a slightly shrinking city with approximate loss of population of 7%.
