The paper deals with the changes in the mining activities and changes of landscape in the Karvina Region. The Karvina Region has been the most important part of Ostrava-Karvina coal bas-sin. Since the industrial revolution, the position of the primary mining area has brought a dynamic economic development, but also the devastation of the landscape. However, there has been recorded also reclamation of devastated landscape in the recent years. The Karvina Region is starting to change its unflattering image of area devastated for the better.
