Chronological information on the occurrence of landslide movements in the past is crucial for determining their hazards or triggers. In addition, regional chronologies make it possible to filter out the general nature of landslide movements from local anomalies. The use of tree-ring based (dendrogeomorphic) procedures appears to be a very effective tool for chronological data collection. In this study, the first regional chronology of landslide movements in one of the most affected regions in Central Europe (the České středohoří Highlands) was thus compiled. A completely unique approach was used to date the landslide events, where only one type of growth disturbances was used, namely tension wood from 274 individuals of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). Using the tree data, the reactivations of seven landslides during last five decades were reconstructed, representing an average recurrence of movements on each landslide of 22.7 years. The use of tension wood brought several shifts in the standard dendrogeomorphic reconstruction. The identified and dated occurrences of tension wood contributed a very high proportion to the reconstruction of the landslide reactivations themselves (75.8 %), demonstrating the minimal amount of noise in the collected data. At the same time, this analysis allowed dating with seasonal precision, thus refining the chronological information on already known landslide events from the wider area. It was the comparison of dated events with historically known events that demonstrated the high efficiency of tension wood exploitation, as all known landslide events from the vicinity of the studied landslides were also identified in the tree-ring based chronology. In addition, the latter also revealed several previously unknown reactivations. The results obtained also suggest the possible nature of the triggers of the reconstructed landslide events.
