Original language description
Although unicellular biflagellated members of Volvocales (also known as Chlamydomonadales) share a simple and uniform thallus morphology, they exhibit remarkable phylogenetic diversity. Moreover, they are found in nearly all types of habitats, ranging from freshwater and marine to terrestrial, including those with extreme conditions. However, despite their environmental role and abundance, the phylogenetic and phylogenomic exploration of volvocalean biflagellates remains incomplete. This is also the case for Chloromonadinia, one of the most extensively studied phylogroups of Volvocales that currently comprises six formally described genera but whose diversity, evolution, and genomic features are only beginning to be uncovered. Here, we expand the knowledge of Chloromonadinia by characterizing a new member, Lercomonas mokradensis gen. & sp. nov. using light and electron microscopy, as well as molecular phylogenetic analyses, including a plastome-based multigene phylogeny. Even though the alga was isolated from a swamp and is closely related to predominantly freshwater taxa, including Chloromonas sensu stricto and Gloeomonas (Chloromonadinia clade 1), environmental DNA data indicated that it, along with its putative congeneric relatives, also commonly occurs in soil environments. Notably, genomic data showed that L. mokradensis does not conform to the expected Chlamydomonas-type telomere repeat motif (TTTTAGGG), previously established as typical for Chloromonadinia, and instead possesses the Arabidopsis-type motif (TTTAGGG), indicating that the history of telomere evolution in Volvocales is more complex than previously thought.
