Original language description
Ostrava was the biggest industrial city in the North of Moravia. Its development was based on heavy industry and coal mining. Coal mines were closed and heavy industry was depressed in the 90s of the 20th century. Completely (or at least partly) abandoned areas comprise about 7% of area of the city.
