Traffic Safety at Roundabouts in the Czech Republic
Original language description
The Department of Transport Constructions, Faculty of Civil Engineering of the VSB-Technical University of Ostrava was in 2009 and 2010 involved in a two-year research project for the Ministry of Transport in the Czech Republic. The project number CG911-008-910 name is "The influence of structural elements geometry on the safety and fluency of operation at roundabouts and possibility of rise crashes prediction". The research includes a large set of roundabouts and was realized based on the analysis accident rates in proportion to the traffic flow. Within the research, data about crashes on roundabouts in the Czech Republic have been collected. The crashes took place in 2007 and 2008 and the sources of the data are records kept by the Czech Republic Police. For selected roundabouts, information was collected about traffic volume. Then, the relative accident rate was evaluated for the roundabouts and links to the geometrical layout were identified. The data cover 99 roundabouts from the whole of the Czech Republic with three- up to five-leg roundabouts - 86 hereof are single-lane roundabouts and 13 hereof are double-lane roundabouts. Types of the roundabouts are based on a relative occurrence of individual types of the roundabouts in the Czech Republic. Results of the accidents research are presented in this chapter. Also there are presented possible accidents causes resulting from geometrical lay-out. The chapter refers to some of monitored situation on roundabouts which can lead in traffic accidents caused not only by the drivers themselves, but also by an inappropriately designed intersection. We were pointed out to situations that had been discovered from a video-analysis of conflict situations conducted on selected roundabouts in the Czech Republic under the research project. The authors are also currently engaged in research of traffic safety and in using of video-analysis of conflict situations for the identification of safety risks at road intersections.
