Effect of Thermophysical Properties of Insulating Materials on Dynamic Response of Lightweight External Claddings

  • Original language description

One of the more common criticisms directed at lightweight construction is the lack of thermal mass. The thermophysical properties of building materials determine the dynamic response of the lightweight building envelope. This study evaluates the thermophysical properties of the four insulating materials, which can be used in the lightweight external claddings. The four different thermal insulating materials (polystyrene, cellulose, mineral wool fibre, wood fibre) were modeled and compared using three parameters - temperature diffusivity, time lag and decrement factor. Different boundary conditions and theoretical methods (numerical and analytical) were used for the simulation calculations. The results of the simulations showed a positive effect of woodfibre insulation with a higher specific heat capacity to eliminate overheating of indoor environment of buildings in the summer. The theoretical results were compared with in-situ measurements, which were carried out on an timber-frame p
