Development and sustainability of bi-centric agglomeration

  • Original language description

The cornerstone of metropolitan areas of the Czech Republic is the so-called integrated system of centres, characterized by a high degree of territorial concentration of the population of economic phenomena, and a high level of internal functional interconnections. Territorial intensity and concentration of interactions within metropolitan areas are mainly reflected in the volume of labour and school commuting, as well as economic activity, as a result of the number and location of job opportunities. Hradec Králové and Pardubice are ranked among 12 meso-regional centres, and together form the core of one of the eleven integrated centres. Together with several affiliated centres, both sites have supercritical values of complex size, and are identified as one of the metropolitan systems of the Czech Republic. The Hradec-Pardubice agglomeration throughout history was referred to as the East Bohemian agglomeration; it is among the so-called polynodal types of concentration areas, which are made up of two or more important centres. In the case of Hradec Králové and Pardubice, it is a polynodal type, with two equivalent dominant centres. This paper outlines the economic nature of the bicentric agglomeration, and at the same time points out the possibilities of monitoring the development of the investments themselves, including their initiation processes.
