Evaluation of the appropriate range of technical and architectural education within the study programme Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Ostrava
Original language description
Architecture and Civil Engineering study programme was opened at Faculty of Civil Engineering in Ostrava in 2006. For this purpose, the Department of Architecture was established, by designating four lecturers from the Department of Building Construction. At the beginning, due to several reasons, the programme was designed rather technically, i.e. was based on the current instruction of the Civil Engineering study programme. Only gradually it was possible, both for staffing reasons and with regard to requirement of the Czech Chamber of Architects about the recognition of architecture education, to adjust the programme to meet all necessary requirements. For the time of the programme functioning, the author of this paper has been one of the key lecturers of the department and since 2010 she has been a guarantor of both the undergraduate and graduate study programme. Therefore, the paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of the instruction and success of the graduates with regard to the organisation of instruction of architectural and technical subjects. As the graduates of the Architecture and Civil Engineering undergraduate study programme may continue to study in the Civil Engineering graduate programme and its fields of studies, it is interesting to see how the students choose the individual fields and why. The first graduates with an engineer-architect degree left the school in 2011, and thus we may discuss in more detail the success of such architects on the labour market. The basic groups of subjects on which the instruction of architecture could be based were studio work subjects, architectural drawing and art work, history and theory of architecture and urban planning and current architectonic and urban planning work. The limitations of the current instruction of technical subjects, particularly with regard to staffing policy of the faculty proved to be difficult. However, these issues are still burning and never ending due to variable numbers of students. Therefore, it is very desirable that the issues regarding the methods of instructions of architecture schools are still updated and both proven and also new options for the study programme work, i.e. in the form of conferences on the given topic were presented.
