The paper focuses on two current issues in Moravian Ostrava. These are: Edvard Beneš Square, whose unresolved space is used inadequately, and the existing, provisionally-located Science Library of Moravia- Silesia. Both of these issues were presented to students currently working on their Master's degree in Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, VŠB-Technical University in Ostrava, to express their opinions on the issues and submit their own design concepts for placing the Science Library on the square. The project was addressed by 12 students during one semester, and the resulting design concepts can be characterized by three different approaches to the concept. These are the definition of the public space, the mass and shape design of the library building and its context within the surroundings, with an emphasis on the undoubted social significance of an institution of the caliber of the Science Library of Moravia-Silesia.
