NEW SPATIAL STRUCTURES OF CEMETERY COMPOUNDS IN THE PUBLIC SPACE OF THE CITY OF OSTRAVA

  • Original language description

Death is closely associated with a society's ability to incorporate the grave site into its cultural legacy and public space within its residential agglomerations. Development in the Czech lands has seen not only new buildings types in the undertaking business, but also the issue of understanding death itself. In the 19th Century, under the influence of new ideas about hygiene and progress, crematoriums were built that changed the ratio of burial methods, especially after 1948 due to the changed political regime in Czechoslovakia. It was only after this period that the massive building of ceremonial funeral halls began, with the aim of replacing the existing sacral facilities harking back to the Christian past and tradition. Previously published works were narrowly focussed on the present situation and development of the Ostrava crematorium in Slezská Ostrava, including the original Cubist-style crematorium in the Moravian district of Ostrava. The objective now is to offer a complete perspective of cemetery compounds within the city of Ostrava, which are constrained by the existing residential agglomerations, and their incorporation and positioning within the city organism. The aim is not only to follow up on prior works concerning the issue of cremation and ceremonial funeral halls, but also to focus on finding new spatial structures and using new forms of burial in favour of new cemetery compounds in the public space of the city of Ostrava and in public life.
