PHILOSOPHY AND ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD CEMETERY, CHANGES IN ITS SPACE FROM MIDDLE AGES TO THE PRESENT

  • Original language description

A cemetery is an inherent part of each city urban planning. An appropriate place for a cemetery is important and it also has challenging claims of a space. This thesis focused on the study of changes in view on a cemetery and due to changes of a cemetery position under the urban planning from the Middle Ages to the present day. The addressed questions were: what essential elements in past shaped the current face of European city cemeteries and what everything has changed in passing of time. The etymology of the word 'cemetery' itself gives many answers to a transposition and a significance of the cemetery as an urban part. The thesis showed the contrast between a view on a burial place in the Middle Ages and a nowadays common practise. The analysis of the past can affect future of the cemetery revitalisation in a principal way. The topic of revitalisations is often discussed these days, not just because of capacity reasons, but also in order to improve a quality of a cemetery space, a class of funeral artistry and a kind of a burial ritual.
