Mourning Hall, space for the Ritual of Passing from this World into the next
Original language description
For a life of quality, we need to know what awaits us and where will we go. As we celebrate birth, we need to honour a fulfilled life. Every society has certain traditions in this regard. Mourning halls have played an important role in burial in Europe and around the world for the last 200 years. Their space is the scene of farewell ceremonies and symbolically they are the place of human transition to another world. In addition to the spiritual experience, an aesthetic experience should also be present, these two impressions are interconnected. The book contains a brief history of burial, the origin and development of mourning halls against the background of the modern cremation movement, the importance of ritual in a human life and the book presents the typology of the building necessary for the design of the mourning hall as well. Last but not least, the book presents student works from the Studio on the topic of the mourning hall at the Faculty of Architecture VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. The book seeks to appeal to the general public and is accompanied by drawings on the subject.
