Deposition of Chloride Ions in the Vicinity of Road I/11 in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Chloride ions occur near the roads primary in form of sodium chloride like a deicing salt or a brine. Usage of salt has many benefits for population, for example safer travel, reduction the number of traffic accident or saves fuel. On the other hand, it brings negatives, mainly high airborne salinity and high corrosivity categories of atmosphere. In this context, it was found that corrosion map is good for wide surroundings, but for construction directly adjacent to the road the values of salinity are higher. This directly affect the speed of corrosion and degradation of the construction. The aim of this article is to measure the deposition of chloride ions near the roads. Measurement in the first locality is about deposition at graduated distances from the road with maximum distance from the road I/11 about 200 m. Second one is more focused on surroundings of the road, in this case to the road cut and bridge. The maximum distance from the road is circa 15 m. These two measurements provide more information about the local microclimate in vicinity of road I/11. Main season of deicing is in the winter month when the difference in the position of the test equipment is most noticeable. The authors are also researching additional measurements on other roads for better understand deposition of chloride ions. The measurement is carried out using the method of wet candle and the method of dry desk in vertical and horizontal position.
