The Effect of the Surface Roughness of the Circular Cylinder on Drag Coefficient
Original language description
The use of numerical simulations to obtain drag coefficient values cd for flow around a rough cylinder in the subcritical and critical Re number regions were the aim of this paper. The model of the cylinder with the trapezoidal waves on the surface was calculated. The results from simulations were compared with standard and available experimental results obtained by measuring of a rough cylinder with similar parameters of the relative roughness and flow regime. ANSYS Fluent software using the RANS SST k-ω turbulence model was chosen for the numerical simulations. This comparative study confirms the influence of the density and shape of protrusions on the value of the drag coefficient and thus on the shift of the position of the of cd drop to lower Re numbers.
