Original language description
The Bloomsbury Global Encyclopedia of Women in Architecture 1960-2020 fills a void in architectural history, giving students, scholars and professional architects an authoritative reference to women architects and their work, and to key terms for gender and women’s rights in architecture.Anna Friedlová, architect and urbanist, was most known for her contributions to government-supported architectural practice. She was born in Ostrava. Her decision to study architecture after highschool graduation was considered a bit eccentric at the time. She studied architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague between 1932 and 1937, with only two femalestudents in her class. After graduation, she returned to Ostrava and married architect Evžen Friedl (1909–1954). Friedlová spent her active professional career in Ostrava, outside the main architectural centers, in an area where there were few architects and much need in designing ordinary buildings. Architecture was limited by the lack of building materials and the overall inefficiency of the socialist economy.
