Effect of waste from CETRIS boards production on the properties of alkali activated materials

  • Original language description

Because of high carbon dioxide emissions in the world, to which cement production alsocontributes (around 7-9%), there has been a tendency to use alternative materials to Portland cement. Alkaliactivated materials (AAM) have shown great promise in this area. The preparation of AAM usually involvesthe use of secondary raw materials, most often granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS). This, in combinationwith suitable activators, exhibits latent hydraulic properties. The use of waste material in alkali-activatedmaterial also has the potential to reduce the amount of landfill waste. During the production of cementitiousparticleboard (CETRIS), two types of waste are generated, either fine powder during the grinding of thefinal surface of the boards, or cuttings that are generated during the cutting of the boards to customerspecified dimensions. The waste from the production of CETRIS boards consists of fine wood chips andcement matrix. For alkali-activated materials, this waste material could potentially have a beneficial effecton extending the setting time (due to possible leaching of the cellulose) and also increasing the strengths inthe case of unhydrated cement particles that may be contained in this waste. In this research, pastes of alkali-activated materials were prepared to determine the beginning of settingtime. Pastes of alkali-activated materials were prepared with different types of leachates, which were madefrom the 3 types of waste materials from the CETRIS boards production (WCM). The leachates were usedas a substitute for water. The effect of all the prepared leachates on the extension of the setting time waslow, almost insignificant.Alkali-activated mortars have also been designed. Dried waste materials were used in the mortar mixes as apartial replacement (10, 20 and 30%) of natural silica sands. Due to the high water absorption of the waste(about 45%), water was added to the mixes to soak it up. The samples were tested for flexural strength andcompressive strength. A decreasing trend in the values of volume density, flexural strength and compressivestrength with increasing replacement of natural aggregate was observed for the samples.
