Original language description
The aim of this chapter is to acquaint the reader briefly with the dynamically developing branch - major accident prevention. In the present-day technical world, major accidents that are to be prevented always occur. Major accidents, such as fires, explosions and releases of toxic substances represent significant events in the life of society, above all owing to their consequences on human health, property and the environment. This chapter summarizes experience with, knowledge of and approaches to the issues of major accident risk assessment in connection with handling hazardous chemical substances in industrial establishments. Risk assessment is one of the steps of comprehensive risk management when risk assessment results present information necessary in proposing measures to reduce risks, preparing emergency plans, and others.
