VISUALIZATION OF RADON OCCURRENCE IN GROUNDWATER RELATED TO GEOLOGICAL BEDROCK OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC

  • Original language description

One of the contaminants of groundwater is radon (222Rn). Radon is a radioactive gas, which, depending on its concentration in water, can be a source of health risk. The risk increases when radon gets into the breathing zone of a person, which often occurs during normal use of water in households. However, there is a need to communicate information about this threat in clear and transparent manner to professionals and the general public. Special maps have been created for this purpose, projected in the background of geological bedrock, which can provide comprehensive information about radon risk in a particular area via visualization of data from monitoring of radon in water. Information obtained from maps can be used for example in the stage of planning of use a new source of groundwater to estimate the financial costs associated with water treatment that reduces radon.
