There are medium voltage networks which have a small extent from the point of capacity current (around 20 Amps). These systems can be operated as isolated neutral systems, resistor earthing systems or resonance earthing systems in numerous other modifications for such an extent of capacity current. The option which is currently enforced is one based on the resonance earthing system. The aim of this paper is to point out the danger of an arc earthing fault which can arise in resonance earthing medium voltage systems, particularly for the concrete specific extent of a medium voltage system and the corresponding capacity current in the areas of (5-20) Amps. For this specific system extent and earthing method there can be multiple re-ignitions during a fault current half-period and this makes it impossible to detect such a fault using (conventional) digital relay protection which works on the principle of fault current individual parts evaluation. This can only occur in the case that a fault arises.
