Analysis of the Possibility to Detect Fake Vessels in the Automatic Identification System

  • Original language description

In this paper, a cyber-security problem is addressed concerning the use of the universal shipborne automatic identification system (AIS). Currently, it is widely used in marine navigation because of the obligatory requirement of IMO (International Maritime Organization) to enhance the ability for identifying a target and to improve marine safety and security in near real-time. Besides vessel identification, the AIS system is used for marine navigation, including collision avoidance, maritime security, and monitoring and accident investigations. Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure the reliability and security of AIS data in organizations responsible for safety and security. In this paper, the vulnerability of the AIS system is investigated, how to detect unusual behavior of vessels based on the AIS statistical data.
