The Influence of Frequency Range on VLF Partial Discharge measurement

  • Original language description

Testing at very low frequencies (typically 0,1 Hz and less) represents an alternative to DC, 50 or 60 Hz hipot tests. It is standardized and up-to date method for medium voltage cable condition assessment. VLF tests can be also used for partial discharge detection and measurement. Unlike the partial discharge detection at power grid frequency, partial discharges at VLF testing have different characteristics and parameters. Furthermore, the possibility of partial discharge detection in various frequency ranges makes the situation even more complicated. Various frequency ranges sometimes provide various results from a single device under the test.
