    Modeling of magneto-optical properties of periodic nanostructures

    Magneto-optical (MO)methods propose many advantages for characterization of ultrathin films and nanostructures. Essential step in processing of MO ellipsometry data and system characterization is the efficient modeling of MO response. Moreover, new MO materials proposed could be designed using nanoscale structures with desired magnetic and magneto-optical properties.This paper concerns with systems of ultra-thin periodic multilayers and nanostructured gratings. For modeling of multilayers we use Yeh andBerreman approaches, while gratings are modeled using Fourier modal method (FMM). Approximative description of the system uses the effective media method, which replaces nanostructured system with an anisotropic MO layer. Effective medium approximationis compared with the rigorous models and limits of applicability are discussed.This paper is particularly focused on dependences on wavelength, structure period, and filling parameter.
