Amorphous Co66Fe4B15Si15 ribbons field-annealed in air atmosphereexhibit the asymmetric giant magneto-impedance effectwhich is promising for sensor applications (GMI valve). The desiredeffect originates from the exchange coupling between themagneticallyharder surface crystalline phase and the soft magneticamorphous bulk. In this paper the magneto-optic (MO)Kerr effect is used to investigate the surface magnetic propertiesof field-annealed ribbons. The dependence of magnetic behavioron annealing condition is reported.Two in-plane magnetization components, parallel and perpendicularto the applied magnetic field, are carefully separated by usinglongitudinal and transverse Kerr effects and using adjustment ofcoil orientation. The effects of near-surface region and the bulkcontribution are separated using the MO vector magnetometry.The near-surface contributions to the magnetic anisotropy andmagnetization reversal are characterized in more details.
