In the Czech Republic where the process of environmental impact assessment has proceeded virtually since February 1993 the intentions for many domains have been assessed. They concern above all the construction of transport infrastructure (highways, highspeed motorways, railway lines, airports), industrial premises, mining of mineral raw materials, construction within domain of waste management, commercial and store centres and agricultural premises. The paper describes steps of environmental impact assessment process pursuant to to Czech Act No. 100/2001 Coll. on environmental impact assessment. The paper deals hereafter with impacts of railway lines on environment. The assessment of environmental impacts of railway lines will be demonstrated in assessing of effects of optimisation of railway division Dětmarovice - Mosty u Jablunkova, state frontier of Slovak Republic.
