Web services are one of the possible tools for distributed architecture. They are nothing special and complicated. Simply say, web services allows software interoperability. Functionality of the current software can be extended by web services in a transparent and "simple" way. Web service is a software component, that offers set of methods. The methods are available thru standardised protocol via network. Web service's clients call selected methods, send some parameters to them and reads the response from the service. Parameters and response can be constructed as simple data types (e.g. string, number) or as complex objects (e.g. GML layer, map, rectangle, coordinate system). Web service's client can be software driven (used) by human user or other web service. Web services can help with effective resources sharing.
