Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of water-bearing subsidence troughs in the Karvina region, Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Considering polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons significant indicators of anthropogenic pollution of the environment, a pilot study observes the content of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of water-bearing subsidence troughsin the Karvina Region. The relevance of PAHs as a pollution load indicator is also supported by the results of monitoring PAH contents in the air of the Karvina Region, namely because PAHs are characteristic organic pollutants in the overall Ostrava-Karvina industrial agglomeration. The studied localities are water areas, e.g. where one is used for free-time fishing and one is characteristic for dominant banked waste rock, a material frequently used for remediation in the region. For the purposes of the pilot study, only six congeners of PAHs, including their sum, are monitored in the sediments, namely: benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, anthracene, dibenzo[ah]anthracene, and benzo[ghi]perylene.
