The influence of observer line geometry on results of visibility analysis
Original language description
An analysis of visibility is one of the basic analyses in GIS, where the precision of the input data influence the quality of results. Visible area is determined by observer site, terrain model and used visibility algorithm. In general is observer line presented by a simple polyline, which is roughly generalised. It is brought to account of curve representation in GIS. Another simplification can be used due to computing of visibility acceleration, but it can induce variance of results. For the efficient using of visibility analysis is important to know acceptable degree of observer line generalisation to obtain reliable results and execute the process more efficiently. We accomplished the analysis of influence of observer line geometry on visibility analysis by using focused experiments. The tests were examined with observer lines considering terrain morphology around them - crest lines, fall lines, contours etc. There were used digital terrain model in several levels of a raster resolution. The test was focused on raster based algorithms provided by ArcGIS and GRASS GIS. The evaluation of output visible area was solved by ANOVA. The influence of observer line geometry in results of visibility analysis was not found fundamentally considerable.
