The impact of ozonation on nitrification processes

  • Original language description

Nitrogen and phosphorus belong to most important biogenic macro elements and both are necessary for microorganisms' growth. Important sources of organic and inorganic nitrogen compounds in water are sewage waste waters and industrial waste waters (from nitrogen production). Surface water predominantly contains nitrogen in the form of ammonium cations (NH4+). This knowledge could be used in waste water treatment. The paper focuses on waste water treatment using ozonation to treat waste water polluted with excessive amounts of nitrogenous substances and its combination with AOPs (advanced oxidation processes). Despite numerous publications on ozonation, it is still a new technology with its advantages and disadvantages when compared to conventional water treatment technologies. It is necessary to examine all parameters and efficiency of the ozonation process - disinfection and degradation processes of hard organic compounds used in the industry. These processes closely influence the success rate of nitrification and denitrification in waste water treatment plants. The paper also evaluates ozone profile decomposition in waste water on the grounds of experimental data and data from literature.
