All lignite mining companies in the Czech Republic have to deal with the consequences of former deep mining. This special problem dramatically influences the extraction, efficiency, and safety of the mining operations. Previous deep mining has a significant impact on the current state of coal reserves. Ascertaining the remaining coal stocks in the affected open-pit mines is very difficult. This article provides one method of calculating the reserves in the coal seam affected by the former underground lignite mining.
