TREATMENT OF ACIDE MINE DRAINAGE (AMD) FROM BROWN COAL MINE SOKOLOV (CZECH REPUBLIC)

  • Original language description

In this contribution, we focus on the possibilities of treatment of AMD formed at the brown coal mine Sokolov (NW part of Czech Republic). As a result of the intensive surface mining, sulphide minerals (pyrite), which are part of the mined coal, oxidise.Sulphides oxidation is the main source of AMD in the environment of Sokolov deposit. Characteristic for AMD from Sokolov is, low pH values (2.7), high concentration of SO42- (1579.8 mg.l-1), Fe (20.0 mg.l-1), Mn (5.2 mg.l-1), Al (15.2 mg.l-1), Ca (265.52 mg.l-1), Mg (96.62 mg.l-1), Na (202.00 mg.l-1) and K (9.7 mg.l-1). The main problem represents the content of sulphates because the allowed limit of SO42- for out flowing waters (e.g. wastewater treatment) is 300 mg.l-1 in Czech Republic. Reduction ofsulphates content under the allowed limit requires more demanding technological processes that in the case of other contaminants in AMD. The main laboratory methods used were pre-treatment of AMD by Ca(OH)2 ? increase of pH value (pH = 7)
