The paper deals with the study of different forms of coal substance and a proposal of a procedure for the summary calculation of content of coal substance in seams and dispersed coal substance in the associated rocks of the Saddle Member of Karviná Formation in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Basin. In the course of study, several partial procedures were used. In the first phase, petrographic samples taken from two mining boreholes were analytically evaluated. The aim of measurements was to ascertain the average content of coal substance in these representatives. After that, the basic data from lithological columns was processed; for each borehole, the content of coal substance in seams and dispersed coal substance in the associated clastic rocksin the area of 1 m2 was calculated. Based on these boreholes, sets of maps for the Karviná and the Frenštát area can be prepared as well.
