The article presents a brief history of the national thematic maps with geological topics in the European context. Despite considerable character and Information fullness of these works and their difficult readability, they represent in every historicalphase leading cartographic products, which are awarded by appropriate social valuation. New technological trends in geological mapping and cartographic presentation of the results, at present almost exclusively in the digital environment of the Internet,also uses the Czech Geological Survey in creating thematic state map series. Valuable map works with the geological theme, however, are also part of comprehensive national atlases, such as the Atlas Landscape of the Czech Republic.
