Environmental study in territory of closed ore deposits
Original language description
Surrounding of Banská Bystrica belongs to the most significant historical mining regions of Central Europe. In Štiavnické Mts. were in Medieval times and later until 20. century exploited Au-Ag and base metal deposits Kremica, Banská Štiavnica and Hodruša. There are even some remnants of older mining activities, attributed to ancient Celtic population. In Starohorské Mts. are several important ore-districts as Ľubietová, Špania Dolina, Staré Hory, which belonged to the most famous historic Cu-Ag deposits of Europe. Except these precious metal, base metal and copper ore mining there was also the very important Hg-deposit Malachov. It was (before discovered the Idria and Mt. Amiata Hg-mineralization) together with Almaden the most considerable Hg-deposit of Europe. The country in the surrounding of above mentioned deposits is still contaminated by heavy metals, acid mine drainage waters and also its morphology (relief) is influenced by technic interferences. The monitoring of contamination as well as application of remediation techniques is the main aim of this presented book. Our study was focused on the environmental hazards at Banská Štiavnica, Ľubietová, Špania Dolina and Malachov deposits to reflect the problems of all three types of deposits (precious metal-base metal deposits, Cu-Ag deposits and Hg-deposits). One of the main purposes of environmental remediation is to restore contaminated sites or resources to a level that is safe for humans and animals. Depending on the type of damage that is done, this can be a complex and expensive process. Even with the help of these professionals and environmental experts, however, sometimes there is nothing that can be done to restore a contaminated site to a point where it is safe. On the other hand sometimes it is suitable to preserv the features of the mining country as interesting technical monuments or biological niches for some plants and animals.
