Mineralogical and geochemical study of contaminated soils in the environment of old antimony mine

  • Original language description

In this contribution, we have summarized results from geochemical and mineralogical studies of contaminated soils from abandoned Sb deposit Poproč in eastern Slovakia. For studied soils are characteristic pH values in the range from acidic (3.5) to neutral (7.0). Soils are contaminated mainly by Sb (up to 5757 ppm), As (up to 2484 ppm) and Pb (up to 683 ppm). Oxidation of sulphide minerals (pyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite) and sulfosalts (fullopite) is the main source of metalloids (As, Sb) and metals (Pb) in Poproč soils. Antimony, As and Pb occurs in soils mainly as a part of secondary mineral phases which are products of sulphide oxidation. For the identification of these phases, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and micro X-ray diffraction (?XRD)were used. Secondary mineral phases from Poproč soils have significantly heterogenic chemical composition from high Fe and low Sb content to high Sb and low Fe content, and in some cases increased concentrations of Ca and Pb (more than 5
