Environmental study at abandoned Cu-mines Libiola and Montecatini Val di Cecina (Italy)
Original language description
This article reports an environmental study concerning some abandoned copper mines located in Italy: Libiola and Montecatini Val di Cecina. The environmental matrices (water, soil, dump sediments, plants) of the studied mining sites were investigated inorder to evaluate their environmental status. The heavy metals mobilization can cause contamination of country components. Our attention was focused on heavy metal content in the studied environmental matrices. Concentration values which we found out bylaboratory analyses were also compared with concentration limits provided by Italian law (L.D. 152/06) as far as soil and water are concerned. Arsenic and antimony speciation was also carried out because of the degree of their toxicity which is controlled first of all by pH/Eh values. Speciation showed presence of the more toxic As3+, Sb3+ forms dominant in water, as well as presence of the less toxic As5+ and Sb5+ species, prevailing in sediments.
