Using Low Cost Materials for Removal of Cr (VI) from Aqueous Environment

  • Original language description

The book summarizes the results of the research, which was focused on the possibility of removing hexavalent chromium from aqueous medium using a "low -cost" biomaterials. Set of seven biosorbents was used for study: Fomitopsis pinicola; mixture of pine cones and spruce, peach stones; apricot stones; shelled walnut, orange peel and Merino sheep's wool. They were studied in simple static "batch" systems to find the most suitable biosorbents, which will then be tested in a dynamic system. It was found, that using chemical pretreatment and adjusting the pH to 1.1 to 2.0 can be achieved increasing of their sorption capacity and for some of sorbents shorter exposure time could be achieved. Based on the best sorption efficiency for all biosorbents was chosen as the limiting parameter of the particle their size of <0.5 mm. Within the kinetic study was to analyze of the experimental data used model of pseudo second-order. It was found that the reaction rate at pH 1.1 is much higher than in the experiments where the pH was not adjusted. Also the effect of the concentration biosorbents was tested. For further studies was the limiting parameter for all tested biosorbents chosen concentration 20 g.l-1. Within the thermodynamic study the influence of temperature on the removal of Cr (VI) in a temperature range from 293 K to 313 K has been studied. Thermodynamic parameters indicate that adsorption was endothermic and spontaneous. In the study of biosorption equilibrium adsorption data were described by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. For chemically modified sheep fleece, and stone peach suit both models. For the other biosorbents was preferable to use of the Langmuir model. The efficiency of the tested biosorbents was validated on the real samples. Based on the results of the indicative test were chosen four biosorbents for further study (royal walnut shells, fleece, mixture of the cones and White agaric mushroom pinicola).
