APPLICATION OF OZONATION IN PRETREATMENT OF NATURALLY AGGRESSIVE GROUNDWATER WITH HIGH CONTENT OF IRON AND MANGANESE
Original language description
Iron and manganese are metallic elements commonly found in the crust of the Earth. Water percolating though soil dissolves iron and manganese so both elements are often found in groundwater in excessive content. Although iron and manganese are non-hazardous elements, in excessive concentrations they can impart colour, affect taste of water and they can also lead to staining during washing. There are several methods available for removal iron and manganese from water, most of them requiring higher pH values. Therefore, initial aeration and alkalinisation with calcium hydroxide is commonly used for pretreatment of naturally aggressive raw water with high content of iron and manganese. Although this conventional solution is technologically fully functional, it brings relatively high operational costs of lime management and disposal of sludge from sedimentation unit and washing of filters. The contribution deals with application of ozonation in pretreatment of naturally aggressive groundwa
