VERIFYING THE QUALITY OF VERMICOMPOST PRODUCED FROM DIGESTATE BY MEANS OF A GERMINATION TEST

  • Original language description

The paper verifies the potential of digestate in vermicomposting and the properties of the final vermicompost with regard to plant yields and quality. All the data are given in relation to valid legislation of the Czech Republic. Germination tests were carried out using vermicompost extract containing digestate and a blind sample in order to determine possible phytotoxicity and ecotoxicity in two different exposure times. Next, we calculated the germination index and thus evaluated the intensity of organic matter decay and vermicompost maturity. The index also informs about possible applications of the materials. Digestate, even if not being a traditional material in vermicomposting, was evaluated as mature compost with stimulant effects during the vermicomposting process. In white mustard using the vermicompost extract containing digestate and exposure of 72 hours the mean value of germination index was 177.78%. The mean value of germination index in watercress using the vermicompost extract containing digestate and exposure time of 72 hours, was 172.88%. The experiment results imply that digestate is a suitable material for vermicomposting using Eisenia Andrei earthworms. The vermicompost with added digestate proved as a quality ingredient, rich in nutrients, to be used in plant cultivation.
