BIOSORPTION OF CHROMIUM IONS Cr(III) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS BY ACTIVATED PLANT BIOMASS OF REYNOUTRIA JAPONICA

  • Original language description

In the present study, the sorption capacity of plant biomass has been studied; particularly the ability of chemically pretreated biomass of stems and leaves of an invasive plant Reynoutria japonica to bind up Cr(III) ions from aqueous solutions. The results of this biosorption study revealed that the rate and extent of uptake of chromium ions were affected by pH level, contact time, biomass concentration and initial metal concentration. The sorption of chromium Cr(III) by B1 and B2 biosorbents activated by 0.01 M HCl and 0.1M HCl at pH 5.0 and 6.0, experiments were carried out with chromium concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 mg/l. In the present study, the maximal experimentally observed uptake capacity for all biosorbents was registered at pH 6. The equilibrium sorption data were described by the Langmuir (Model 1 and 2) and Freudlich isotherms models in both linear and non-linear forms. The Langmuir models 1 and 2 display significantly different values of parameters. Yet, in both linear form models, constant b was the highest in the case of biosorbent B2, activated by 0.01 M HCl. Its value reached 1.2 (in the case of model 2), which gives evidence about high affinity of this sorbent for Cr(III). In addition to this, also correlation coefficient was in this case very high (0.9954). Nevertheless, high value of qmax for this B2 biosorbent (20.79 mg/g) was obtained at pH 6, when activated by 0.1 M HCl.
