The article deals with using information technology (IT) in the waste management. The aim of the authors is to compare the ways of waste disposal in the past and at present in the Czech Republic as well as in other European countries. They point out how IT consequently becomes a part of the whole waste disposal process. IT plays a significant role in the field of municipal waste where it is used, for example, to optimize GIS waste collection routes or to monitor the utilization of containers for cost optimization during waste collection. The article introduces the Smart Waste Collection System, which is part of the Smart cities concept.
