Application of biotechnological methods in mineral processing

  • Original language description

The paper deals with the removal of hydrocarbons C10-C40 from the river sediment using flotation and bacterial leaching. Flotation, as a purely mineral processing method, was used to remove a large percentage of organic pollutants. Flotation has not been applied in the cleaning of organically contaminated soils and sediments in the Czech Republic so far. The flotation collecting agent was Montanol 551. The flotation results show that the method appears as very effective as dominant proportions of the pollutants pass into the flotation concentrate. With regard to the fact that the content of the organic pollutants (hydrocarbons C10-C40) in the solids exceeded the limits for dumping this waste on disposal sites, a suitable decontaminating technology had to be selected, which would permit a safe disposal of the waste on the disposal site or a new method of utilization of the decontaminated sediment (e.g. for land reclamation). Bacterial leaching is consequently applied on such separated samples. Bacterial leaching using Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus was applied for the final treatment. With regard to efficiency of reducing the contaminant concentration, better results were achieved with Rhodococcus sp. bacteria. It shows that both the methods were selected well as C10-C40 hydrocarbons dropped by 80%.
