Comparison of determination of selected heavy metals in industrial wastewater using by AAS and ICP-MS methods

  • Original language description

This paper deals with the determination of selected heavy metals (Ni, Cd, Pb) in industrial wastewater. These samples are from industrial enterprises in the Moravian-Silesian Region. It is generally known that heavy metals have a negative impact on both human health and all environmental compartments at very low concentrations. For this reason, it is very difficult to select a suitable method for determining these metals. Within this research two methods of determination were compared. The first method was atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was chosen as the second method. The obtained values from both methods were compared with each other. Based on the observed values, it can be concluded that the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) method is more suitable for the determination of heavy metals in industrial waste water. The atomic absorption spectrometry method can be used to determine these metals when the measured values are in the concentration of tens of ppb units.
