Recent years have witnessed an unprecedented progress in practical usage of Earth observation in wide spectrum of domains. The leading world metropolis as well as small communes recognised the benefits of up-to-date, detailed and varied data provided by satellites, aircrafts and unmanned air vehicles, often at a reasonable cost or even for free. No really smart city and smart region can nowadays omit remotely sensed data from its repertoire. Simultaneously, progress in geospatial artificial intelligence and cloud computing is shaping a new generation of methods and tools for remotely sensed data processing while still leaving enough space for a further development. The GIS Ostrava 2022 offers a high-quality forum to discuss and push forward a synergy between smart city technologies and Earth observation.
