The problem of profitability of quarries producing aggregates

  • Original language description

Quarrying is a business. Theoretically, only profitable quarries should be operated. Knowing which indicators are associated with profitable quarries and which characterise loss-making quarries is essential in this context. The annual results of 35 quarries in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in 2009–2023 were analysed. In total, 265 annual economic results were collected. The results of the application of the discriminant analysis method showed that the profitability of a quarry is ensured on the sales side by significantly higher production and sales and slightly higher unit production prices. Loss-making quarries have sales problems and operate less efficiently in terms of operating costs. Closing a loss-making quarry is not an immediate solution due to the great difficulty of opening a new location and considering possible changes in the demand for the products of a quarry.
