Tectono-sedimentary evolution of the North Danube Basin: insights from 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and basin modeling within the Pannonian back-arc system (vol 114, pg 907, 2025)

  • Original language description

The study by Rybár et al. (2025) provides a comprehensive reconstruction of the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the North Danube Basin within the Pannonian back-arc system, integrating newly acquired 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, vitrinite reflectance data, petrophysical measurements, and one-dimensional basin modeling across four representative sub-basins (Želiezovce, Blatné, Komjatice, Gabčíkovo-Győr). A key contribution of the paper is the precise dating of a vitro-crystal andesite tuff from the Nová Vieska-1 well, yielding an eruption age of 13.75 ± 0.14 Ma, firmly anchoring the lower–upper Badenian (Langhian–lower Serravallian) boundary within the regional stratigraphy. This result corrects previous biostratigraphic interpretations and provides a robust reference horizon for correlating syn-rift sequences across the basin system. Using updated lithostratigraphy and calibrated thermal models, the authors reconstruct four distinct Miocene rift phases, characterized by episodes of rapid accommodation creation and sediment influx. Accumulation rates locally exceeded 3,000 m/Ma during the upper Badenian and Sarmatian, and tectonic subsidence reached >1,000 m/Ma in the early syn-rift intervals, highlighting the dynamic extensional regime of the basin. The models also demonstrate significant spatial variability in heat flow, strongly influenced by proximity to Neogene volcanic centers, which in turn governs the depth of the oil and gas windows. For example, the Komjatice sub-basin exhibits a shallower early oil window (~1.5 km) due to elevated heat flow linked to the Central Slovakia volcanic field, whereas the Želiezovce sub-basin exhibits deeper maturation thresholds (~2.2 km) near the cooler Transdanubian Range block. The paper’s evaluation of sedimentation, thermal history, and subsidence challenges earlier models by demonstrating that Lower Miocene units in the Slovak sector are pre-rift deposits, not part of the Danube Basin fill. It also documents basin-wide synchrony in mid-Miocene volcanism and provides evidence that volcanic inputs critically influence both depositional patterns and thermal regimes. Overall, the study offers a significant refinement of regional stratigraphy, accurately constrains Miocene volcanic and tectonic events, and provides a methodologically rigorous framework for hydrocarbon system assessment in continental back-arc basins. It stands out for its integration of high-precision geochronology with advanced basin modeling and its implications for correlating syn-rift stratigraphy across the Pannonian Basin System.
