    ANALYSIS OF ACICULAR FERRITE FORMATION IN HAZ OF PIPE-LINES STEEL AFTER HIGH HEAT INPUT WELDING

    The Ti adding to low-carbon steel leads to the microstructure modification from side plate ferrite (Widmanstätten ferrite, upper bainite) to acicular ferrite. The study has been carried out to classify the effect of acicular ferrite formation on toughness improvement of heat affected zone in large heat input welding (simulation process). The formation of intragranularly nucleated ferrite in heat effected zone results in improvement in material response. The steel after Ti-adding contains non-metallic inclusions of Ti2O3-type. These inclusions have dense cation vacancies what contributes greatly to preferential nucleation of various faces adhered with Ti2O3 (increase of Ti2O3 nucleation potency). This inclusion acts as preferential nucleation site of MnS and TiN. Precipitation of MnS results in a formation of Mn-depleted zone at Ti2O3/ferrite interface. This zone has higher chemical free enthalpy change for ferrite nucleation. TiN decreases interfacial energy for ferrite nucleation. The
