Hydrogen - Damage Effect on Structural Steels

  • Original language description

The severity of hydrogen deleterious effects depends on strength level, chemical composition, impurity content, and microstructure of structural steels. Harmful hydrogen effects on structural steels include: decrease of ductility as measured by elongation at fracture, and reduction of area, in particular at slow strain rates and at temperatures about room temperature; delayed failure under a static load; enhancement of the rate of propagation of a pre-existing crack; reduced fatigue strength; stress corrosion cracking in some form (SSC and HIC); blistering; hydrogen attack. All of these effects ultimately lead to lowering of the amount of externally applied load, energy or work necessary to produce material failure. In the present paper, the effects ofHIC and SSC are discussed. These effects can result from corrosion - generated hydrogen. Because the absorption of such hydrogen is greatly enhanced by sulphide - bearing waters is particularly conducive to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Th
