Oscillation of the shape of rising bubbles
Original language description
40 years ago, Wellek studied the shape of rising drops in immiscible liquid. The shape of drops was found to be essentially close to an oblate ellipsoid, and the ratio of vertical and horizontal dimension of the side projection of drops was determined asa function of Eötvös number. Resulting well known correlation is also frequently used to predict the shape of medium size so called ellipsoidal bubbles (for air-water system volume of the bubbles 10-500 mm3). By image analysis of records of rising bubbles, obtained using a high speed video camera, time series of characteristic parameters of the bubble projection were obtained. Model of oblate ellipsoid is quite satisfactory. However, unlike the drops, rising bubbles are significantly wobbling and evidently, the ellipsoid and all geometry parameters of its projection change as well. Two motions can be distinguished, i.e. slow rotation about a vertical axis, and harmonic wobbling about a horizontal axis. We have developed a mathematical
