Ni-Ti and Ni-Ti-X based shape memory alloys - metallurgy and microstructures

  • Original language description

Shape memory phenomena were observed for the first time at the beginning of the sixties in Ni-Ti based alloys. Ever since, on this problem was paid great attention. Systems Ni-Ti-(X) are based on equi-atomic compound of nickel and titanium. Ni-Ti based alloys are highly stable and resistant to corrosion. The basic requirement to metallurgy of these advanced materials is strict adherence to chemical composition of the alloy, which is the main condition for obtaining of the alloy with the required transformation behaviour. Ni-Ti based alloys are usually melted at the temperature of approx. 1500 °C. This article is focused on preparation of binary Ni-Ti rich, Ni-Ti-X (X = Zr, Hf, Nb) ternary and quaternary high temperature shape memory alloys by differentmethods, such as plasma melting, vacuum electron beam melting and vacuum induction melting. Determination of contents of interstitial elements was done too. Observation of microstructure was realised by optical and electron microscopy.
